A Medium Mine Protected Vehicle from BAE Systems dwarfs a full-sized Chevy pickup as it travels along Route 30 in West Manchester Township Wednesday. (YORK DAILY RECORD/SUNDAY NEWS -- PAUL KUEHNEL)
If you see large military vehicles throughout York County this month, don't be alarmed.
BAE Systems has started testing its Medium Mine Protected Vehicles on roads in York and Adams counties.
The vehicles needed approval from the state Department of Transportation to embark on 100-mile test drives, because they exceed the allowable weight limit for local roads.
Today, a vehicle left the BAE site on Bairs Road in West Manchester Township and turned onto Wolfs Church Road. From there, the vehicle took Route 616 north to Route 30 west to Route 15 north to Route 114 east. The test drive continues along Route 15 south and returns to the defense contractor's plant.
